Can Pictures Bring Back The Scent of a Memory?

People living in Britain are seemingly so in tune with their senses that they can recall the smell connected with a scene or location just by taking a look at a of it. That's according to studies released by a major camera manufacturer to mark the launch of its latest digicams, which they claim capture memories in more vivid detail than ever before.

The study, which was conducted across 23 states, exposed that 47% of Brit people surveyed can recall the scent associated with an image, and many stated that they would actively take an image of something based only on the way in which it smells. The results also show that English ladies are more likely to concentrate on the scent of their surroundings when taking a picture than men, with over a quarter stating they would capture a photograph of something that smells appealing for example a rose garden. This research is very important for people who are looking for new Canon cameras.

Commenting on the analysis, Dr Raquel Heinz, a leading world expert in the mental science of scent and a teacher at a major school, announced : This analysis shows just how powerful the link between our memories and the sense of smell actually is. While an image can visually remind us of a particular point, if it is accompanied by scent it will elicit far more emotional and evocative memories more than any other memory trigger.

When asked to rate a catalogue of scents that were most certain to trigger a memory, over 53% of continentals surveyed named the hint of freshly cut grass as their top Memory scent, with the hint of suntan lotion and baby talc coming in at 2nd and 3rd.

Talking about the results, Dr Heinz claimed: "For many years scientists have conducted research into the linkage between our senses and our capability to recall memories. My analysis shows that our sense of smell in particular has a uniquely intimate and direct connection with the area of the brain that controls emotional memory. It isn't surprising that so many folk chose freshly cut grass and sunscreen as their top memory scents, as these smells are strongly associated with infancy - the time when our first scent memories are being formed. For most scents associated with youth like the smell of a hot summers day in the fairground have a particularly robust capability to trigger an emotional memory that takes them back to their youth."

A representative for a major digital camera manufacturer comments: "While a photograph is the final way to capture and document lifes most precious memories, we wanted to try something a little different and see whether there was another factor involved in recollecting a certain point." The manufacturer has been exploring every angle that people pursue when wanting for new Sony cameras.

This research into the scents associated with memories shows that not only do Europeans have a wonderful ability to remember certain scenes and locations based on scents and smells, the majority also make a deliberate attempt to maximize the power of these memories for themselves.
